When I joined Vineyard Village at Home, I was under Hospice care. I didn’t know how long I’d be here. But Vineyard Village volunteers took me to play reading, church gatherings, plays, concerts and other places. The stimulation of those groups and the personality of the drivers gave me a whole new lease on life. Now, I feel as if I have a future that’s vibrant.
I’ve just met the nicest people ever. The ones I drive regularly I get so fond of. There’s one woman, she’s a sweetheart. She can tell me all kinds of stories. Physically she’s on a walker, but mentally she’s sharp as a tack.
There are so many people who have lived on this Island their whole lives, and they’re such a pleasure to drive with. I’ve learned so much from them, and I truly truly enjoy their company. They’re such a delight.
It’s been rewarding, certainly. It goes well beyond that, though. It’s much more than doing a nice thing for somebody.
I love seniors and everything that they bring to the table, from their wisdom and life experience to their wonderful senses of humor. Vineyard seniors are incredibly accomplished, interesting, funny people who love to talk.
These people are an example of what I hope to achieve when I’m 100.
It’s a godsend.
It’s very, very rewarding. The people you meet are wonderful and they’re so happy to see you, so grateful. It’s totally flexible and there’s no pressure to volunteer any more than you’d like.
It’s another opportunity for me to socialize and members are so grateful. It beats being a couch potato!
If it weren’t for Vineyard Village I’d have to hire taxicabs and I’d be on my own as far as picking specialists to help me around the house. It’s a wonderful service and a remarkable group of volunteers. You form friendships as you go along.
It may sound corny but I do it for myself because it makes me feel so good to help people in a small way. I get to meet these incredible people who I would not necessarily have crossed paths with. And these people so appreciate everything you do, and it is nothing.
